Potatoes

Potatoes are part of the nightshade family, which includes all of my favorites: tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. It also includes tomatillos, ground cherries, tobacco, and the decorative chinese lanterns.

Buy your seed potatoes in December and January, when selection is best. As the winter goes by, the availability goes down because the seed potatoes were grown last season, and are very limited.

Planting time is usually early to mid-spring, as soon as the ground can be worked, which makes harvest times in mid-summer, for new potatoes, or late summer and fall, depending on the variety.

Read the articles below for growing tips, bed preparation, and routine cultivation needs, as well as harvesting and storage notes.
