Planting Out

Transplanting

  • When to plant your tomatoes: Wait for night time temperatures to stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit for best tomato production.
  • they should be ready to plant outdoors when you see the first flowers forming. Harden them off first, but still be prepared to cover them with fleece or cloches if there is any risk of a late frost.

Bed Methods

  • Plant vine tomatoes quite deeply, 15-18" apart in single or staggered double rows at least 36" apart. Bush tomatoes may need more room: plant them up to 36" apart, though dwarf varieties can be as close as 12".

Spacing

Orientation to the sun

  • If you are growing your seedlings for growing bags or large containers, place them in a warm spot, ideally protected by a sunny, south-facing wall.
