First Frost 2009

E-mail Print PDF
Well, we've had our first frost of the year! It was 11/16. Lucky that I brought all of the tomatoes in on the 15th.

Last Tomato Harvest of the Year

E-mail Print PDF

I brought in the last tomatoes yesterday. There were tons of tomatoes...I think the tomato plants were more productive from September till November than during the whole summer. It shouldn't be a surprise, I guess, since our summer temperatures are always above 95 degrees.

Several of them were ripe enough to eat, so those will go into the fridge. There are too many to eat in the next few days. The green ones I packed away in trays with shredded paper. They will ripen over the next few weeks and should keep in storage until we can eat them.

Still Harvesting Tomatoes!

E-mail Print PDF

I can't believe it, but we are still harvesting tomatoes out of the garden!

Yesterday I picked Tigerellas, a Paul Robeson, Black Plum, Green Zebra, Oaxacan Pink, and an Early Girl. A Martian Giant split from the rain, so it was no good, but it would have been, if it hadn't rained.

Still on the vine is one last Pineapple Tomato and a bunch of Early Girls and Better Boys. :) We'll see if they continue to ripen on the vine. Eventually I need to take them inside to ripen, though.

Seed Harvesting

E-mail Print PDF

This weekend I am trying seed saving for the first time. I collected seeds for:

  • cosmos
  • marigolds
  • South African Daisies
  • Giant chives
  • coreopsis
  • Lavender Bergamot
  • blanket flower
  • echinacea
  • bachelor buttons
it's quite a trick to recognize the seed in all of the debris of an old flower. Some of the plants aren't ready yet...like my Maximilian sunflowers. I wasn't successful with saving any of the dahlia seeds, although i think I disbursed quite a few of them.
